The medical discipline at Nankai University began in 1930 with the establishment of a preparatory medical class at the School of Science. In 1980, then Nankai University President Yang Shixian and Tianjin Medical College President Zhu Xianyi jointly proposed establishing an eight-year medical education pilot class, with Nankai University responsible for the teaching tasks for the first three years. That summer, 20 students from the D-I eight-year medical program were admitted according to Nankai University's college entrance exam cutoff scores. This was the medical preparatory class established by a comprehensive university nationwide, and after Peking Union Medical College, it was the second D-level higher education institution in the country to offer eight-year medical education. Starting in 1987, due to medical education reforms replacing the eight-year system, Nankai University successively provided preparatory medical education for five medical institutions: Tianjin Medical College, Harbin Medical University, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Hebei Medical University, and Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
